i have a jar of spaghetti sauce and other things that have been open for quite a while but the expiration date says they r still good for a really long time. the jars don't specify 2 use within so many days after opening but surely an open jar of something wouldn't be good for like a year would it?|||when you opened it, you introduced bacteria that is floating in the air, on the spoon you used to dip some out, many ways. You also broke the seal that was keeping it vacuum packed, which has a lot to do with its shelf life.
you have about 4-5 days to use it up.|||The date you're referring to is a Sell By date, not a product expiration date.
If you have a year left on the Sell By date, and open the product, it will not last a year after opening.
Practically speaking, if you opened a jar of spaghetti sauce and stored it in the fridge, you can use it for maybe 2 weeks more, but then throw it away.
Good luck|||Unfortunately...once a product is open....it will not be good for very long..Of course it does depend on what it is...Spaghetti sauce might be good for a few days...maybe a week or more...check it before you plan to use it..so there are no surprises....|||The expiration date on canned good means they can be safely stored in your cupboards (under normal conditions) for that long and still be edible when you open them.
Once you open them they spoil like any fresh foods would.|||No. Once it is opened, it begins to breakdown so it may very well be spoiled before the expiration date on the package.|||Some things may need to be refrigerated, but it also depends on how the food is stored. your spaghetti sauce should be fine.|||Not always -it depends on the product AND if the product was handled in a food safe manner and held at proper temperature, etc.|||This is my go to site for all food related quality questions: http://stilltasty.com/
